The
Pet Travel Scheme (pets) is the system that allows pet
animals from certain countries to enter the UK without
quarantine as long as they meet the rules of the scheme.
To re-enter the UK from other EU countries or other
qualifying listed countries under PETS you must have
had the following procedures carried out on your pet
:
|
|
 |
•
Micro Chipping •
Rabies Vaccination •
Blood Test For Rabies
Antibodies
• Pet Passport Issued
- Your pet will need to be examined by one of our Local
Veterinary Inspectors and you must present documentary
proof of rabies vaccination and a positive blood test
result. •
Treatment for Ticks and
Tapeworms between 24 and 48 hours prior
to return to the U.K. |
 |
|
 |
The entry requirements
can vary greatly from country to country. An EU pet
passport will allow you to enter most other EU countries
but even within the EU requirements may vary somewhat.
Chingford Kennels
aim to give the best current advice on all aspects of
travelling with your pet.
However, you are responsible
for ensuring that your pet meets all the requirements
for entry into any country to which you intend to travel.
You are also responsible for
ensuring that you have the correct documentation to
allow entry into other countries and return to the UK.
If you do not, your pet may not be able to enter the
country or may be licensed into quarantine on arrival,
at considerable cost.
It is important that you contact your local Animal Health
Divisional Office (AHDO) or the authorities (e.g. the
Embassy) of the country you wish to enter before you
plan to travel to check the requirements. |

IMPORTANT
POINTS TO BEAR IN MIND BEFORE TRAVELLING ABROAD WITH
YOUR PET |
 |
• For
animals travelling abroad on the PETS scheme and intending
to return to the UK there is a 6 month interval after
a successful blood test before your pet can re-enter
the UK
• A small proportion of animals will fail
to reach the required blood antibody levels. In this
case, unfortunately, you will need to pay for a second
rabies vaccination and blood sample. In young and old
animals whose immune response may not be as strong it
may be advisable to have a second rabies vaccination
prior to blood sampling to increase the chance of success.
• After the first or primary rabies vaccination,
it is not possible to enter another EU country for a
least 21 days after the date of the vaccination. However,
this can vary from country to country and you are requested
to check with your local AHDO or the relevant foreign
authorities prior to travel. • Dogs
and cats being exported to countries outside of the
PETS travel scheme will have different requirements
for rabies vaccination and in some cases tests to exclude
other diseases. It is important that you contact your
local AHDO and that country's authorities at an early
stage to ensure that you are fully informed of that
country's requirements and make the necessary arrangements.
• If your pets stays in another country for more
than a few weeks it may become subject to that country's
rules of residence e.g. pets in France become residents
after 3 months. This has several implications. For instance
in France and other countries annual vaccinations for
rabies is a requirement. We would therefore advise that
you consider annual vaccination for rabies to ensure
compliance and maximise protection.
• Some countries do not allow certain types of
dogs to enter (dangerous breeds) and may have special
rules on others (e.g. muzzling).
• Microchip - it is important to check that your
pet's microchip is working before travelling. |
