Our

of help if your dog is :
Scheduled for or recovering from surgery

Your dog will have fun, too! |
|
 |
WHAT
IS HYDROTHERAPY ? |
|
 |
 |
| Research shows
that swimming (hydrotherapy) can be of real benefit
to dogs with a variety of conditions. The word hydrotherapy
is derived from the Greek words hydro (water)
and therapeia (healing). It is a form of treatment
where dogs will swim, often against underwater jets
to increase resistance, wearing a buoyancy aid. |
 |
|
 |
 |
The benefit
of hydrotherapy in rehabilitation has long been recognised.
The non weight- bearing exercise of damaged or repairing
limbs and supporting tissue helps speed their recovery.
Muscle wastage can occur very quickly if a painful limb
is not being used properly. This can hinder recovery
after surgery as the limb has to repair itself as well
as correct muscle, tendon, ligament and soft tissue
immobility. |
|
 |
Today,
more and more veterinary surgeons and dog owners are
aware of the advantages of hydrotherapy before and after
surgery to speed a full recovery. |
 |
|
 |
A
FUN WAY TO TREAT MANY CONDITIONS |
|
 |
 |
Most dogs love
water and swimming and our state-of-the-art hydrotherapy
pool is a safe, comfortable and carefully controlled
environment which encourages low impact, non weight-bearing
exercise. Following surgery, dogs can swim as soon as
the stitches are removed and wounds are healed. the
warmth and natural water pressure of our pool is comforting
and an excellent way to reduce inflammation and regain
mobility without putting unnecessary stress on joints.
We have a hoist as well as a ramp so any size of dog
can enter the water safely. |

HYDROTHERAPY
TRAETMENT CAN HELP WITH : |
|
 |
 |
|
Pre and
post operative conditioning which can reduce muscle
wastage and accelerate recovery after
surgery.
Relief of pain association when using
a particular movement or limb, for example in animals
suffering from arthritis.
Swimming can give an increased range of motion and
a possible reduction
in the need for painkilling medication.
Hip dysplasia, by giving regular gentle
exercise. Young dogs can exercise safely and have
fun without the risk
of damage to the hips.
Spinal injuries, cruciate ligaments
injuries, fractures and neurological damage.
General mobility and co-ordination.
Relief of pain, swelling and stiffness
following injury or surgery.
Weight loss in conjunction with diet.
Promotion of relaxation and a greater
mental well-being. |

GODDARD
VETERINARY GROUP HYDROTHERAPY CENTRE |
|
 |
 |
| Our
Hydrotherapy Centre is based in the grounds of Chingford
Boarding Kennels. Both are owned by the Goddard Veterinary
Group - one of the largest veterinary practices in the
UK, with three hospitals and a network of branches within
Greater London. We have been caring for animals for
more than 50 years and will always provide the best
possible care and treatment for your pet. Our Centre
is managed by Matt Cornell and run by Su Glass and Sam
Clements, veterinary nurses qualified and experienced
in hydrotherapy. |
 |
| Your
initial session will last for approximately an hour
so allowing plenty of time for a detailed case history
to be taken and assessed, your dog to be weighed, a
general health check to rule out any foreseeable risks
and discussion on your pet's therapy plan. We will tailor
this to their current ability but will amend it accordingly
when necessary. |
Initially your
dog may not swim for more than a few minutes in order
that we can regularly check their temperature and ensure
against over-exertion. The jets will be used when your
dog is fit enough and feels completely confident in
the water. We advise half an hour for follow-up swims
to allow a reassessment and monitoring of progress.
As well as the medical benefits of hydrotherapy, your
dog might simply enjoy a warm swim indoors, whatever
the weather! It's ideal for fun and general fitness
and suitable for agility, working and racing dogs alike.
It is also a perfect solution for clients who find it
increasingly difficult to exercise their dogs. Showers
and drying facilities are available. |
 |
|
|
If
you feel hydrotherapy would benefit your dog please
discuss this with your Veterinary Surgeon. We
may need to contact your vet before a booking
is made to obtain confirmation of good health.
We also have a vet on site should additional advice
or treatment be required. |
|
| Our
hydrotherapy pool is of the latest design, using
jets that do not create undercurrents which might
otherwise hinder your pet's buoyancy. Our aim
is to make their experience as stress free as
possible and to allow a trusting bond to develop.
This will enable your dog to enjoy the best, personalised
exercise regime possible for their recovery. |

WHAT
VETERINARY SURGEONS ARE SAYING ABOUT : |
|
 |
 |
| Hydrotherapy
provides a unique method of improving mobility and quality
of life in dogs with orthopedic or neurological disease.
After surgery, hydrotherapy enables a quicker return
of function by improving muscle mass and range of joint
movement without the limb having to bear weight-bear.
Patients with long term mobility problems will really
benefit from improvements in muscle mass and joint mobility
and will also see improved cardiovascular fitness which
in conjunction with diet, will aid weight loss programmes.
Neurological patients can benefit by encouraging movement
which leads to stimulation of proprioception receptors
thereby aiding nerve regeneration (diseases such as
CDRM or fibroartilaginous emboli are ideal candidates.) |
|
|
| |
Orthopaedic
Veterinary Surgeons give hydrotherapy a big
thumbs up
"The hydrotherapy
centre will provide a huge positive benefit
to our patients, which our clients will see
and value. After a few years, I expect we'll
wonder how we lived without it!"

PULSED
MAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY (PMFT) |
|
 |
 |
PMFT
is a valuable tool in treating a variety of injuries
and inflammatory conditions such as fractures, strains,
bruising, arthritis, back pain and hip dysplasia. Pulsing
a magnetic field creates a vibrating effect within the
body's tissues and has been likened to a micromassage
penetrating deeper and acting more diffusely at cellular
level than is possible with physical or manual massage.
PMFT used at low frequency has a similar effect to the
use of ice packs in reducing swelling and inflammation
or at higher frequencies can increase circulation and
the supply of oxygen to damaged areas.
Our therapy unit makes PMFT available either in conjunction
with hydrotherapy or as a stand alone treatment. |
